Acrylic

Exhibited at The Target Gallery’s ‘Queer Valentine’ exhibition at the Torpedo Factory, Alexandria, VA, in February 2020.

I play with subversion, humor, and stereotypes. based on placing un-stereotypical items onto queer women, Acrylic nails are not seen often, playing off the stereotype that all gay women have short nails. I created a series with hints of ironic humor to visualize this dichotomy. I like how thought processes can fold into each other, like thinking about when stereotypes can be used and who they can be used by, how they are set up, and the rabbit hole that “queer aesthetic” unfolds itself to be. This sets up my current practice that establishes nuance and play within constructed binaries.
